Clara Brörmann (*1982) lives and works in Berlin. She studied Fine Arts with Prof. Daniel Richter, Prof. Anselm Reyle, and Prof. Robert Lucander at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
In my paintings I pursue a kind of 'anthropomorphic geometry’: Via a long process oriented production and physical moments of identification, the abstract paintings transcend the viewer into a complex structure of space and time.
Their physical relation is reflected in the tactile surfaces, the spatiality, and the considerations of proportions, which resonate with the corporeality of the viewer.
My abstraction arises from the figurative (similar to Mondrian, Alexej Jawlensky, Blinky Palermo, or, for example, Christian icons), in contrast to abstraction that arises from theory, systems, architecture, or even just the material itself (as, for example, in Sol LeWitt, Hanne Darboven, Sarah Morris, Josef Albers, etc.). Thus, for me, a painting is always essentially like a „living counterpart."
What fascinates me about painting is the interplay of its pronounced materiality and simultaneous transcendence. In this way, it creates its own space and can communicate abstract themes such as specific energies or temporal phenomena. It is characterized rather by intuition, sensory perception, and experience than by concrete knowledge—it allows for a unique, unprejudiced perspective on life.
My works invite viewers to look longer and raise fundamental questions about perception – for example, about physical presence in the encounter with the painting or about the meaning of contemplative observation. In this way, the medium of painting itself is constantly re-examined. (Clara Brörmann, 2026)
